Born and raised in Sarabari village of Darrang district, Hemanta Kumar Deka dedicated every chapter of his life to the welfare of society. His journey of leadership began at a young age when he became the first General Secretary of the Bherua High School Students Union and the founding editor of the school magazine, Kusum.

Guided by the timeless principle of "Simple Living and High Thinking" — a value imparted to him by his respected teacher, Manoranjan Sharma Sir — he built a life rooted in integrity, discipline and service. His politics was never about power or personal gain; it was about public welfare, social justice and community development.

He served as a primary school teacher for nearly a decade, nurturing young minds and inspiring countless students. Understanding that education is the foundation of social progress, he played a pivotal role in establishing Andherighat Maharshi School, an institution that continues to shape the future of many children. He also founded Manav Kalyan, a social welfare organisation dedicated to underprivileged communities.

Even after undergoing a kidney transplant, he refused to slow down — returning with renewed determination to serve. The words "impossible" and "I cannot" simply did not exist in his vocabulary.

On 11 August 2025 he suffered a brain stroke and was admitted to hospital. After fighting bravely for nine days, he passed away on 20 August 2025 at the age of 51. The outpouring of sorrow that followed was a testament to the love and respect he had earned throughout his life — thousands from every walk of life gathered to pay their final respects.

Today his legacy lives on — in institutions, communities and countless lives touched.
